When I first set foot in Milan many years ago, I realized that to get to know it, you need to look at the city from different perspectives. Milan, on the one hand a modern and fashionable metropolis, and on the other a city hiding history and tradition at its heart. Looking at it from above allows you to see its multidimensional character and, take some cool photos for Instagram. I have prepared a guide to the best vantage points in Milan, giving you an almost Madonnina-like view of the city from the top of the Duomo. I write almost because traditionally, Madonnina always has to be the highest…
We will start our journey with the symbol of Milan – the Duomo Cathedral. As you ascend to its roof, you’ll see the city in all its glory, from the crowded square at its feet to the distant Alps. We will then move to the modern Porta Nuova district, where skyscrapers draw a very different picture of the city in the sky. I won’t leave out the terraces of bars and hotels, either. This is just a foretaste of what awaits you, so buckle up – our tour of Milan’s best viewing spots is just beginning!
The best viewing points and terraces around the Duomo
Terraces of the Duomo Cathedral: the most popular viewpoint in Milan!
Anyone who has visited Milan at least once knows that walking on the roof of the Cathedral of the Birth of St. Mary, proudly towering over Piazza Duomo, is not only an opportunity to admire the architectural details of one of the world’s most significant temples but and the incredible views of the city stretching to the horizon. This unique perspective allows you to lose yourself in the beauty of Milan, and if you’re lucky and the weather is favorable, it will take your breath away with sweeping views of the Alps. Therefore, this is where most tourists begin their visit to Milan.

Although climbing to the roof on your own requires spending 13 euros, the investment is more than worth it — both for the opportunity to see the city’s skyline and for the close contact with the amazing architecture. When else will we have the opportunity to walk on the roof of such a monumental building? What’s more, in summer the cathedral becomes a concert arena, further enhancing the visit. For those who prefer to save themselves the effort, there is also an option to take the elevator for 15 euros, a convenient alternative to experience this unique place effortlessly.
The seventh floor of La Rinascente: a drink and the Duomo at your fingertips.
Right next to the majestic Duomo Cathedral stands the huge department store “La Rinascente“. After a day filled with shopping, you should head to its seventh floor. There, on the terrace, awaits you not only the opportunity to have a meal or a drink but also a unique opportunity to look up close at the cathedral, which seems to be at your fingertips.

Highline Galleria: a walk through the dome of the Galleria
A few steps from Rinascente, in via Silvio Pelico, you will find the entrance to Highline Galleria. On the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II rooftop, you can get closer to its famous dome than anywhere else.
This unique path, 250 meters in length, weaves around the Gallery’s glass roof, providing not only access to views of Milan’s rooftops but also the opportunity to follow a path that was once used exclusively for maintenance purposes.

Galleria Vik Milano: a luxury window into Milan’s “living room”
While talking about the Galleria, it is impossible not to mention the Galleria Vik Hotel. Located in the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the hotel is where chic and elegance come together in each of the 89 uniquely designed suites.
From the hotel’s windows, and there is no shortage of those with balconies, there are stunning views – whether of the always vibrant Piazza della Scala or the interior of the Gallery itself. It is this last perspective that will allow you to feel the true spirit of Milan!

Museo del Novecento i restauracja Giacomo Arengario
On the opposite side of the square to the Gallery is the Museo del Novecento, which offers a great view of the cathedral’s facade and the entire square. From the grand staircase, terrace, and covered balcony, the view is indeed enviable.

The Palazzo dell’Arengario, the building that hosts the museum mentioned here, also houses the Giacomo Arengario restaurant on the seventh floor, from which, as well as from the museum, you can admire the Duomo, the Piazza Cadedral and other surrounding buildings. You get to the top of the tower by elevator – the cost is 6 euros per person, but the visit is not long, up to 10 minutes or less depending on how many people are waiting in line. On top of that, the viewing platform is glazed, so the view is definitely not of the same quality as on the Duomo. But I think it’s worth the trip nonetheless.

Monte Stella: a hill in the city
Monte Stella, also known as Montagnetta di San Siro among Milan residents, is an artificial hill offering a magnificent view of the city and the surrounding Alps. It was created from rubble left by bombings during World War II. The project to transform these ruins into a park was proposed by architect Piero Bottoni, who dedicated it to his wife, Elsa Stella, after whom the hill is named.
Nowadays, Monte Stella is a resting place for locals, where one can ride a bicycle and enjoy the picturesque view of Milan from its top, especially charming in the evenings when the city lights up.
The park also includes the Giardino dei Giusti (Garden of the Righteous), dedicated to the memory of those who opposed genocides and crimes against humanity, with trees planted in honor of significant figures.
Bonus
Montevecchia
The best views of Milan, you know, can be enjoyed from above, but sometimes it’s worth moving away from the city to get a better perspective. That’s why I think it’s worth popping out to Montevecchia.
Montevecchia is a picturesque hilltop town in the Brianza region, between Lecco and Milan. It is known for its breathtaking panoramic views across Brianza to the Apennines. The highest point of the hill, at 503 meters, offers magnificent views of Milan, especially beautiful after sunset. Montevecchia is also home to the Santuario della Beata Vergine del Monte Carmelo, which offers impressive panoramic views of Milan. Another place is the Parcheggio Panoramico di Via Alta Collina (parking lot), from which you can enjoy the surrounding views.

Conclusion
All in all, Milan offers great terraces and vantage points from which to view the city. From the cathedral’s rooftop terraces to historic towers to modern sites, each allows you to see Milan from a completely different perspective. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, these panoramic points are the perfect chance to experience the city’s unique character.
Personally, however, I recommend going to the roof of the cathedral the most!

I lived in Milan for 18 years, and it was there that I came to know the city’s daily life best - not just its landmarks, but also its rhythm, its habits, and its less obvious sides. Today I live in Wrocław, but I still return to Milan regularly.
