The city council is headed by Sindaco<\/strong> \u2013 the mayor. He is directly elected by the people of Milan for a period of 5 years, after an election campaign during which he presents to the voters his program and the program of the Executive Council (Giunta) that he intends to implement. After the election, he appoints the members of the Executive Council. <\/p>\n\n The current mayor of Milan is Giuseppe Sala, who was elected to the position in 2018. He is a member of the Italian Democrats party. Sala was previously the general manager of EXPO 2015 held in Milan, as well as the director of infrastructure and transport at the Milan municipality. Its goal is to further develop and modernize the city\u2019s infrastructure, as well as to improve the quality of life of residents through investments in culture, sports and environmental protection. <\/p>\n\n The City Council is made up of the Mayor and sixty councilors (consiglieri) elected by the citizens of Milan.
