You get to the top of the tower by elevator – the cost is 6 euros per person, but the visit is not long, up to 10 minutes or less depending on how many people are waiting in line. On top of that, the viewing platform is glazed, so the view is definitely not of the same quality as on the Duomo. But I think it’s worth the trip nonetheless.

The restaurant offers high-quality Italian cuisine, while the bar offers a selection of select wines, original cocktails, and beers. It is the perfect place for a romantic dinner or a relaxing evening drink.

Monte Stella: a hill in the city

Monte Stella, also known as Montagnetta di San Siro among Milan residents, is an artificial hill offering a magnificent view of the city and the surrounding Alps. It was created from rubble left by bombings during World War II. The project to transform these ruins into a park was proposed by architect Piero Bottoni, who dedicated it to his wife, Elsa Stella, after whom the hill is named.

Nowadays, Monte Stella is a resting place for locals, where one can ride a bicycle and enjoy the picturesque view of Milan from its top, especially charming in the evenings when the city lights up.

The park also includes the Giardino dei Giusti (Garden of the Righteous), dedicated to the memory of those who opposed genocides and crimes against humanity, with trees planted in honor of significant figures.

Montevecchia is a picturesque hilltop town in the Brianza region, between Lecco and Milan. It is known for its breathtaking panoramic views across Brianza to the Apennines. The highest point of the hill, at 503 meters, offers magnificent views of Milan, especially beautiful after sunset. Montevecchia is also home to the Santuario della Beata Vergine del Monte Carmelo, which offers impressive panoramic views of Milan. Designed by the esteemed Gio Ponti, the tower was unveiled in 1933 during the era of fascist rule and was initially named “Torre Littoria” in tribute to fascism. Its name was changed to “Torre del Parco” (Park Tower) after World War II and later became Torre Branca in 2002 following extensive renovations undertaken by the Branca distillery company.

Measuring 108.6 meters, the Branca Tower is the sixth tallest structure in Milan, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city skyline, the Alps, the Apennines, and part of the Po Valley on sunny days.

The tower’s design is a marvel of modern architecture, characterized by a slender, transparent structure that was built in a record time of just two and a half months. Its main structure is a pyramid with a hexagonal section, built from special steel tubes known as Dalmine tubes, which are connected by flanges and bolts.

Torre Branca’s history reflects the city’s evolution and its role in promoting modern architecture and art. It was built during the 5th Triennale Exhibition, marking Milan’s “European exclusivity” for the triennial exhibition of decorative arts, industrial and modern architecture. The restoration and reopening of the tower in 2002 symbolized a new era of creativity and innovation for Milan, and Branca aimed to restore the city’s pride through this unique landmark.

Milan’s main cathedral, known as the Duomo di Milano or the Cathedral of the Birth of St. Mary in Milan (Italian: Santa Maria Nascente di Milano), is an iconic symbol of the city. Built of glistening Candogli marble, its construction began in 1386 and continued until 1966, a testament to its monumental character and historical significance. This impressive structure, with more than 3,400 sculptures and exquisite stained glass windows, is an outstanding example of Gothic architecture in Italy, distinguished by its unique combination of northern influences with elements typical of Lombardy.

The facade of the cathedral in Piazza del Duomo, with its classical windows and neo-Gothic crown, is a true architectural masterpiece. The interior of this temple, especially the chancel, which was restored in the second half of the 16th century, deserves special attention. Atop the apse vault, which is part of this unique structure, is an extremely valuable relic – the Holy Nail of the Cross.

Outside, the huge edifice of the cathedral is crowned by a soaring turret, which houses the famous statue of the Virgin Mary (Madonnina), made of gilded copper, 4 meters high, and dated 1774. For those who want to deepen their knowledge of this remarkable monument, the Museum del Duomo offers a rich exhibition related to the history and art of the cathedral.

Once you reach the top, you’ll be greeted by a remarkable panorama that winds between the spires and allows you to approach the famous Madonna, located at 108.50 meters and 4.16 meters high, which has protected the city of Milan since 1774.

The terraces extend over 8,000 square meters and offer close-up views of the spires, pinnacles, arches and numerous statues that adorn the Duomo.

The Madonnina del Duomo, the church’s highest point, is the patron saint of Milan and, despite ancient traditions, has been surpassed in height by modern buildings such as the Pirelli skyscraper.

From the cathedral’s terraces you can enjoy a great view of all of Milan. On sunny days you can even see the snow-capped peaks of the Alps and the surrounding Po Valley from here. It is decorated with 135 ornate spires and more than 3,400 statues, creating a veritable forest of stone rich in decorative elements carved from Candoglia marble.

The interior of Milan’s cathedral is very impressive. This church is the largest Gothic building in Italy and there really is something to admire. From the very bottom, where there are old crypts, to the very top with vaults – there is something interesting hidden everywhere. It’s worth taking the time to explore thoroughly, as every element of the cathedral has its own history and significance.

Tomb of Charles Borromeo

“Scurolo di San Carlo” in the Duomo Cathedral in Milan is a truly unique place! It was designed in 1606 by Francesco Maria Richini. The name “scurolo” comes from the word “scuroeu” in the Milanese dialect, which means a dimly lit space. This small octagonal room is located just below the chancel of the cathedral, next to the crypt. It was specially completed and decorated for the canonization of Saint Charles Borromeo, which took place on November 1, 1610. This place is truly unique and worth a visit!

It is separated from the main chapel by a classical entrance. Inside is a unique urn made of crystal and silver – a gift from Spanish King Philip IV, designed by Cerano.The interior is decorated with marble mirrors in the lower part and 19th-century fabrics above. These fabrics were later enhanced with elaborate embroideries of silk and gold and silver threads. The designs allude to Eucharistic symbolism and the Borromeo family.

The Sack of Judgment Day

Inside the cathedral itself, along the right nave, near the entrance, one can find an unusual and mysterious object – a huge sack made of thick jute material, suspended high from the ceiling. What’s inside? This mystery is surrounded by legends and mysticism. According to the story, this enigmatic bag will fall to earth only once – on the Day of Judgment. It’s fascinating how the additional element gives the cathedral an aura of mystery and arouses curiosity among visitors, forcing them to wonder about its true meaning and history.

Ottone Visconti’s sarcophagus

The sarcophagus of Ottone Visconti, located in the right nave of the cathedral in Milan, is a significant symbol of the city’s history and the prominent Visconti family. In this sarcophagus rests Ottone Visconti, the first member of the Visconti family to rule Milan. This sarcophagus is supported by two majestic columns made of Verona marble. Inside the sarcophagus are also the remains of his successor, Giovanni Visconti.
Initially, this sarcophagus was located in the destroyed cathedral of St. Tecla; it is now part of the archaeological area beneath the cathedral.

Sun clock

The sundial in Milan Cathedral, created in 1786 by astronomers at the Brera Observatory, is one of the first features that catches the eye upon entering the church. It is located on the floor near the main entrance.

It’s a simple but ingenious mechanism. There is a brass strip with zodiac signs on the floor, and a small hole in the right wall. When sunlight comes through it at noon, it falls exactly on the zodiac sign where the sun is currently. This way you can not only check the time, but also see what zodiac sign you are currently in.

Saint Bartholomew skinned

Milan Cathedral is home to a unique sculpture, “San Bartolomeo scorticato,” made by Marco d’Agrate in 1562. The statue depicts one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, Bartholomew, who was sentenced to death for his Christian faith.

The sculpture depicts Saint Bartholomew in a special way – he carries his own skin on his shoulders, a reference to his martyrdom. This way of depicting the saint became popular after Michelangelo used such a motif in his fresco in the Sistine Chapel.

D’Agrate did not focus on the spiritual dimension of the figure. Instead, he created a detailed study of the human body, which was typical of the Renaissance and its fascination with anatomy. There is an interesting note on the base of the sculpture – the artist jokingly warns not to confuse his work with that of the famous Greek sculptor Praxiteles.

Torre Velasca is unlike any other building in the world. It stands prominently in the heart of the city as proof that postwar Milanese architecture could be bold, uncompromising, and deeply rooted in local tradition, even if at first glance it looks like something from another planet.

Why does Torre Velasca look like a concrete mushroom?

The tower’s distinctive silhouette, widening from the 18th floor upward, draws on medieval defensive towers and the traditions of Lombard architecture.

This distinctive skyscraper was built between 1956 and 1958, with the main structure completed in a record 268 days, and the entire building finished in 1960. It is considered one of the most important works of postwar architecture. Its name comes from a square laid out in 1651 on the initiative of Spanish governor Juan de Velasco.

Because of its unusual shape, locals quickly nicknamed it the “skyscraper with suspenders.” Torre Velasca’s form is striking: the lower floors occupy less space than the upper levels, giving the building a mushroom-like profile. The architects from the BBPR group, however, intended it as a contemporary reinterpretation of medieval tower structures, such as those at Castello Sforzesco, designed to fit into the historic fabric of central Milan.

This distinctive structural solution also had a practical purpose. The first eighteen floors (the building reaches a total height of 106 meters) were designed for shops and offices, which required less depth. The upper levels, up to the twenty-sixth floor, house apartments. The wider top made it possible to create larger living spaces and bring in more natural light.

The BBPR Group and Its Vision of Modernity

The tower was designed by the legendary BBPR studio, whose work redefined Italian modernism by integrating it with historical context.

Torre Velasca was designed by the BBPR studio (Gian Luigi Banfi, Lodovico Barbiano di Belgiojoso, Enrico Peressutti, Ernesto Nathan Rogers) for the company Rice, with Professor Arturo Danusso as structural consultant. The building was constructed on the ruins left by the Anglo-American bombings of 1943, in the heart of Milan, just next to the Università Statale.

The project began in 1950-1951. The original concept of a steel tower was abandoned due to the high cost of materials. Final design changes were made between 1952 and 1955, and the construction itself was financed by Società Generale Immobiliare. Despite its complex form, the building’s main structure was completed in a record 268 days.

The decision to use concrete instead of steel—favored at the time by iconic American skyscrapers – was not driven by cost alone. An initial assessment by experts from New York showed that the Italian steel industry was not yet equipped to handle such a structure. Concrete proved to be a more flexible material, making it possible to realize the vision of a neo-Gothic tower in a modern form.

Torre Velasca is located right in the center of Milan, very close to the Università Statale, between Corso di Porta Romana and Via Larga. It is clearly visible from the roof of the Duomo. It is worth walking a little farther around Torre Velasca, because within a 5- to 10-minute walk there are several interesting places. Closest is the Università Statale, with the courtyard of the former Jesuit palace. Not far away is Piazza Santo Stefano, a quieter part of the center with a basilica and traces of the old city walls. A few minutes farther on is the Crypt of San Sepolcro, linked to the Roman history of Milan. In the church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro, meanwhile, you can see Bramante’s famous perspective illusion. If you feel like extending the walk, Corso di Porta Romana is also a good direction to head. The whole route can easily be done in about an hour.
